Pranks and Band Camp

7/8/2012

After hearing more and more about potential pranks at camp, I need to address the issue.  Pranks of any kind cannot be part of the "tradition" of band camp anymore.

There has always been a fine line between what was an acceptable, fun, prank and what wasn't.  Different people have different ideas as it pertains to this.  The simple fact is I, as the director, must put the best interest and physical and psychological safety of ALL the students in the forefront.  I will consider any prank as bullying and it will be dealt with under school policy as bullying.

Simply stated, pranks of any variety will no longer be acceptable at Pennfield Band Camp.

This will made repeatedly clear to students before we leave for camp, and again when we arrive.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Preparations

Band Camp is fast approaching.  We leave a week from Sunday on July 15th.  It seems like it hasn't been that long since we got out of school but it has been nearly a month.  As some of you know, there is a lot of behind the scenes planning that goes into band camp.  The first thing I always do is hire the staff.  The past few years it has been easy since our staff remains nearly unchanged from year to year.  This year in fact, we have the exact same staff coming back as we had last year, including our band moms!  It'll be great to have such experience with us again at camp.  Let's just hope it cools off!  The next thing I worry about and stress over is the marching show itself.  Many of you know that it is a Stevie Wonder show this year.  The songs are:  Sir Duke, Superstition, and Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours. Chad wrote the drill for the first two songs before he joined the U.S. Air Force, and Mr. Rose is writing the last tune.  There are some neat things in each of the drills and I know you'll have a good time learning them.  The next piece is the paperwork, and that's where you come in.  Please be sure you have turned in your paperwork for camp, either early next week, or when you come to your Band Camp Boot Camp rehearsals.  You must have:
  • Student Information Sheet
  • Parent's Day Pick-up Form
  • Physical Form, must be within the calendar year

These forms are available to print on your own from this website, click here.   If you take prescription medication, you will be given a form for each medicine for your parents to fill out and return before we leave for camp on Sunday.

A Few Changes for this Year

Remember last year when we altered the schedule due to the heat?  I thought it was very successful to get out early in the morning and march together as a band rather than have sectionals first.  We are going to do that again this year.  Here is the revised band camp schedule for this year:

                                                         6:15 am--      Reveille

                                                         7:00 am--      Breakfast

                                             7:45 to 7:55 am--      Room Clean-up

8:00 to 9:45 am--      Full Band Rehearsal

10:00 to 11:00 am--      Sectional Rehearsal

11:00 am to 12:00 pm--      Free Time

                                                       12:00 pm--      Lunch

1:00 to 2:00 pm--      Sectional Rehearsal

2:00 to 2:30 pm--      Squad Rehearsal

                                           2:30 to 2:55 pm--      Break

3:00 to 4:30 pm--      Full Band Rehearsal

4:30 to 5:30 pm--      Free Time

                                                         5:30 pm--      Dinner

6:30 to 8:30 pm--      Full Band Rehearsal

                                           8:30 to 10:30 pm--      Evening Activity/Free Time

                                                       10:30 pm--      Taps (Lights Out)

Please notice a few items.
  1. Time in the schedule each morning to clean your rooms!  Rooms will be inspected daily by counselors and rooms that aren't clean will be cleaned during free time.
  2. There is a Break from 2:30-2:55.  You will be expected to be relaxing during this time in a shady spot or doing something fun with other band members.  (this will also be known as Frisbee time)

Cell Phone Use at Camp

I can tell you this.  I have lost sleep this summer thinking about just what to do with cell phones and band camp.  Banning their use just doesn't seem to work, and I don't have the time or energy to police the cell phone use anymore.  Our time can be best spent in other ways.  So, I'm going to allow cell phone use at camp under the following parameters (regulations):
  1. All phones must be clearly labeled with a student's first and last name.  Use tape or some other method that will last throughout camp.
  2. Phones will be powered off and checked in with counselors during Sunday night's activity time.
  3. Phones will be checked in each evening and kept in a secure location with counselors.  They may be checked out each morning at a time designated by each counselor.
  4. Phones will not be seen or used during any meal, rehearsal, sectional, or organized band activity.  This includes the evening activity of the band, which is meant to be a team-building and bonding activity.  Phones must be left in rooms during this time.
  5. Common sense and courtesy is necessary in using devices that contain a camera.  Do not take pictures of anyone without permission, and do not invade personal privacy.
  6. Phone charging must take place during the day and is the sole responsibility of the student.  Phones will not be kept overnight for charging.
  7. Band Camp is a time for band interaction and team-building.  Students who isolate themselves consistently to talk or text may face additional limits on cell phone use.
  8. Parents should depend on cell phones for casual communication only.  Signals at camp can be weak, inconsistent, and sometimes even non-existant.  In emergencies, call the camp directly at 231-829-3421 and ask to speak to Mr. Driver.
  9. If a staff member observes a student failing to follow the above rules, the phone will be confiscated for the remainder of camp (student removes and retains battery).  Students who do not check in a phone in with their counselor and use it "secretly" will face disciplinary action and consequences.
This rule change is solely dependent upon you, the students, and if you cooperate with it.  If at some point during camp, I feel the band will be better served to not use the phones, I will not allow them to be checked back out.  I don't foresee this happening, but again, this depends on your cooperation.  I will not have my phone at meals, sectionals, rehearsals, or activities as well and I'm going to ask the band camp staff to do so with me.

Between now and band camp

What should you do now, today, to get ready for camp?  I think you should get your instrument out and play it.  Play the fight song.  Play something you like.  Play something you know.  Make sure your instrument works correctly and is clean.  Go run around the block.  Get your blood moving through your veins!  Work up a sweat doing something.  There will be a lot of sweat at band camp which just makes it great!  Check with your parents and make sure you know the schedules for camp and boot camp next week.  It's all on the website.  Click each date for details on who is supposed to come.

The last thing you can do is just think about band and band camp and why you're doing what you do.  Think of all who have marched before you and worn the Pennfield uniform.  If you are new to HS this year, welcome.  If you're returning to band, welcome back, and you know the feeling of pride when you've marched your best and performed for a grateful audience.  Discipline, pride, and tradition is what the Pennfield Band program has been built upon.  It's up to you now.  Band, are you ready?

Back to Blogging

Hello and I hope you're all having a nice summer!

I decided to come back to the blog and see how it goes.  I kind of got into it for a while but then figured out that not too many of you were reading it.  If you do read this, please leave a comment.  I would like to know who reads and if you feel I say anything interesting.  :)

Summer is a funny thing.  I have been home with the boys and Jennifer everyday since summer began.  It's fun to see them every morning and be a part of the morning routine.  They can be quite busy and a little grumpy (the boys, not Jennifer) each morning.  The key is to keep them busy and letting them know what's going to happen next.  They're not so good at transitions.  That reminds me of being a teacher.  You students always want to know what happens next and I am going to do better at keeping you informed of that this year.  Anyway, back to my summer thoughts.  Even though I'm home with the kids and Julie, my mind is always drawn to band things.  I'm always thinking about you all and how to make the school year better.  I read magazines about band.  I read facebook "band director" pages constantly, and I'm always messing with the band calendar to try to get the information out to you all in a more streamlined way.  I hope you are thinking about band, too!

I miss you all.
See you soon,

There are so many different end of the years lists, I just had to put one out there of my own.  Of course, it will be band related since this is the "From the Podium" blog.  This is a top ten in name only.  I'm writing the highlights of the band program chronologically as I think of them, and not necessarily in the order of importance.  In fact, I won't even number them.  I'll just list them.
  • March, 2011-7th and 8th grade band earns 1st division rating at festival under Mr. Dixon.  This is the first 1st division rating since 2008.
  • March, 2011-HS Symphonic Band earns 1st division rating at festival.  This marks the 3rd consecutive year of the 1st division rating
  • Pennfield Board of Education approves HS band trip to Washington, DC.
  • Pennfield Board of Education approves change of beginning band program.  5th grade band is eliminated and two sections of 6th grade band now exist.  Future beginning students will start in 6th grade at Pennfield.
  • April, 2011-1st Annual Fine Arts Showcase is held at Pennfield.  It's a huge success and will become an annual event.
  • May, 2011-Great spring concerts by all groups including the return of the Jazz Band and also some superheroes and light sabres at the concert.
  • June, 2011-Jazz Band tours Pennfield elementary schools.
  • June, 2011-Congratulations to the Class of 2011!
  • July, 2011-Band Camp, HOTTEST week of the summer.  Need I say more.  PHS Grad Chad Osenbaugh writes drill for Bon Jovi show
  • August, 2011-2nd annual KVA classic at WMU
  • October, 2011-Band performs at the Hastings Invitational for the first time
  • October, 2011-Band performs special pre-game drill in honor of Lacy Faber.  "LF" is placed on field.
  • October, 2011-Panther Marching Band earns 1st division rating at Marching Festival in Jackson.  This is the first 1st division rating since 2008.
  • Oct/Nov-2011-Football team earns 3 home playoff games and the band performs at each one
  • November, 2011-One of the busiest months ever for the bands with fundraisers, two parades, and the band's performance at The Music Man.

There are just too many special accomplishments to list here so I know I've left some out.  What about you?  What was your highlight of the year band-wise?  Feel free to comment and share with the rest of us.

2012 is not lacking for special moments I'm sure.  We have so many things to get ready for and look forward too.  I hope each and every one of us is up to the challenge.  I think we are.  Here's to 2012.  "Bands, are you ready?"

Until then, I'll see you....

The Last Step...kind of

12/6/2011

With the completion of the Marshall Christmas Parade last night, we officially ended the 2011 marching season.  The band has taken their last step of what was a very busy season.

It all began in July with pre-band camp.  I remember those first couple of evenings as we taught the newest band members the fundamentals and the Pennfield traditions.  It was an exciting time of year to have everyone back and getting together.  We talked about our goals for the year, got to know each other and began our quest for a great season.  We received some press that week too as the BC Enquirer came out Friday evening and the band marched down Pennfield Road.

Sunday afternoon came and so did the heat.  We were off to the Kettunen Center for 2011 band camp.  It was one of the hottest weeks of the year and also one of the hottest in the last several years.  The band persevered each and everyday.  We worked hard and we played hard too.  I called the band, "the hardest working band in the land" and that was so evident at camp.  We had very few "injuries" and people sitting out at camp, even though the heat index grew to near 100 degrees most afternoons.  There were a few pranks (sticky notes and glitter to be more clear) but that was all part of the fun and we all left camp Friday proud of what we accomplished.  We were tired, but ready for the season to come.

With Tuesday night rehearsals all throughout August, the season had arrived.  The band premiered the Bon Jovi show at the KVA football classic at Western Michigan University on a beautiful late August evening.  The football team didn't disappoint either.  In fact, as you know, they didn't lose a single game all year until the 3rd playoff game.  School started and students' lives got busier and so did mine with the pending arrival of new baby girl Driver.  September saw the BC Invitational, Homecoming and our band queen Taylor Haudek, and then on October 1st, our first performance at the Hastings Invitational.  October 8th, Jennifer Tigist Driver joined the world and Mr. Dixon and Ms. Squires took over band duties for a week or so.  I was so proud of the work they did with the band to get ready for marching band festival on the 15th.  The band earned a 1st Division at festival for the first time since 2008!  It was very exciting and I was very proud of them.  We don't talk about "the streak" anymore, but secretly I hope this is the beginning of a new one!

November came and so did the playoffs, parades, and The Music Man.  It was the busiest November's we have all had and kudos to all band members and families for keeping track of  the schedule and for representing Pennfield in such an positive way.

Congratulations to all who played a part in a successful marching season.

Zzzzz's and Thank you

Have you ever received a thank you note at just the right time?  Today I received a thank you letter addressed to me and the whole HS band from someone who attended the Music Man performances last week at Calhoun Christian School.  The person who wrote the note was so kind and generous with her compliments, acknowledging that this was no small feat to coordinate such a performance.  She thanked me, the band members, and even the bus drivers and the administrators who helped make it happen.  She gets it, and it was so refreshing to read this letter.  I want to write her a thank you note for her thank you note!

I needed to read something like that today.  It's been such a busy month of November with a few more things yet to come.  Last week alone the HS band did the Music Man rehearsal on Tuesday evening and then performances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.  Throw the football game in there on Saturday afternoon and that makes 5 events over the course of 5 days.  I was tired.  My family missed me and I missed them.  At the football game, a band parent made a comment to Mrs. Driver that she missed her child this week too because he'd been so busy with band things at night.

It is my hope, every time I schedule a performance of the band students, that many people will enjoy and appreciate their efforts, and in turn, mine.  Performances don't just happen.  They take planning, rehearsal, more rehearsal, logistics, more rehearsal, and execution.  I also hope that the students themselves and look back after each performance and realize they made someone's day better because of their music.

ZZZzzz's:  Sleep at the Driver household these days has been at a premium with little baby Jennifer only sleeping 3 hours at at time at the most.  Mrs. Driver and I kind of take turns waking up with her, and more often that not (95 percent of the time) little baby sister and I end up in the chair in the family room.  Luckily, it doesn't bother me to sleep in the chair and it sure is what little Jennifer wants too.  She snuggles right in and we're good for a few hours there so mommy can get some much deserved uninterrupted rest.  Other parents tell me that I'll miss these sleep-less nights someday.  (sleep-less in that I sleep less than I used to and not completely without sleep)  Ok, well, I would like to start missing them now please....

Enjoy the band's performance tomorrow at the BAttle Creek Christmas parade, and be sure to say thank you, or better yet, write a note and send it!

See you 'from the podium,'

Mr. D

What a Game, what a defense!

11/5/2011

What a game last night at Pennfield!  In my 8 years at Pennfield, that had to be the best game I've ever been a part of.  I was very proud of the band members and how they brought their spirit.  It was true Pennfield grinding football.  Coach K and his assistants really had the defense ready to go.  To hold this Sexton team to just 6 points on the night was amazing.  I kept waiting for them (Sexton) to get a big play like last year's but Pennfield allowed just that one.  It was awesome.  What is even better now is that we get to host another playoff game.  Grosse Ile beat Detroit Douglass and we have more playoff points then they do so we get the game.  Mr. Boyer said most likely the game will be on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking of defense, it got me thinking about when defense is appropriate and when it isn't.  Defense is appropriate at a football game, yes, and also while driving, but not all the time during life.  I think people are too defensive these days.  I think especially students are too defensive, both with me and with each other.  I believe that most people are good people at heart so why must we always have our guard up?  So many times during the teaching day, I ask a student a question and they immediately become defensive.  It doesn't matter if I'm reprimanding them for something or not, they are quick to put their guard up and therefore close their eyes and ears to the truth.

Defense is important...at the right time, but being nice and listening to people is more important.

See you from the podium,
Mr. D

I just signed up for a Twitter account for the band.  I actually had to read some websites about how to use twitter since I had no idea.  If any of you have any tips on the best way to use it, I'd appreciate it.

I'm excited about the playoff game tomorrow night.  I feel like we're ready to put on a great performance despite the students that will be missing.  We as a band play an important role at the games.  Let's be LOUD!

Be sure to keep a careful eye on the calendar this month.  It's a busy one.

Until then, see you from the podium,

Panther Victory...bring on Lansing Sexton

10/30/2011

This past Friday night, the rains came and left just as quickly and the clouds gave way to a clear and cold evening at Pennfield stadium.  To me, it was perfect football weather and nearly perfect weather for band.

The game this Friday is at home as well against Lansing Sexton, the team that knocked us out of the playoffs last year.  If you remember that game, we had more fans there than they did.  I hope we get the opposite result this year.  Marching band call-up time is 6 pm.  Let's cheer our team on to another playoff victory!  (Attendance is required by the way)
